If you have a modern Apple device, you can use Apple Pay to confirm your transactions. Apple Pay can be used both online and with payment terminals in brick-and-mortar establishments. You link one or more credit cards (or certain other accepted transaction methods) to your Apple Pay, and then use Apple Pay to confirm transactions. It is safe and convenient, and many users like not having to give sensitive credit card information to vendors.

In brick-and-mortar places, you need either an iPhone 6 or later or an Apple Watch paired with an iPhone to use Apple Pay. On the web (using Safari), you can use any of these options:

  • iPhone 6 or newer with iOS 10 or later
  • 2014 iPad (Air 2, Mini 3) or newer with iOS 10 or later
  • 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch ID or newer
  • 2018 MacBook Air or newer’
  • Macs supporting Handoff running macOS Sierra or later paired with an Apple Watch or iPhone 6 or newer

Compatibility

Examples of large international payment solutions that work together with Apple Pay are VISA, VISA Electron, V Pay (in Europe), MasterCard, Maestro, American Express, and China UnionPay.

Apple Pay is also compatible with certain regional solutions and can for instance be utilized together with Mir in Russia, Interac in Canada and Elo in Brazil.

Important: The Discover card can only be used with Apple Pay in the USA.

How do I add my credit card to Apple Pay?

You can use any of these methods:

  • Enter the card information manually.
  • Go to your iTunes account. If you find the card there, select it and add it.
  • Use the device to photograph the card.
  • The issuer of your card might have their own app in which you can connect the card with Apple Pay.

How many credit cards can I add?

Apple Pay can store a minimum of 8 credit or debit cards.

Using Apple Pay in a brick-and-mortar facility

Hold your authenticated device (e.g. your iPhone) near the point-of-sale system´s NFC card reader. Verify the transaction using passoce, Touch ID or Face ID. (On an Apple Watch, you verify by double-clicking a button.)

Apple Pay works with merchant terminals that accepts contactless payments. No special ”Apple Pay terminal” is required. Wireless near field communcation (NFC) is utilized to send data between the terminal and the Apple mobile device.
